Throughout his 19-year career, NHL referee Mick McGeough has been known for making questionable calls. However, Mick — or “Mr. Magoo,” as he is known — may have reached a new low in last Friday’s game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars.
With eight seconds left, the Oilers trailed by a goal and had a faceoff deep in Stars territory. In textbook fashion, Edmonton won the faceoff, got a shot on net, and potted the tying goal with under six seconds on the clock.
However, just as the sold-out crowd at Rexall Place started to explode, McGeough halted all celebrations by waving off the goal in his usual emphatic fashion.
Using his X-ray vision, McGeough deciphered, from the other end of the ice and through a slew of players, that Oilers centre Shawn Horcoff had gloved the puck off the faceoff, negating the play and the subsequent tying goal.
Making McGeough’s superhuman eyesight all the more impressive was the fact that the linesman dropping the puck gave no indication of a hand pass.
As the play was non-reviewable, the Oilers couldn’t get a second opinion on the call during the game. Following the game, no replays confirmed McGeough’s apparent revelation of a hand pass.
The blown call was not McGeough’s first of the game — he also missed a goaltender interference call on Dallas centre Eric Lindros in the first period. Lindros appeared to rip the stick from Edmonton goaltender Dwayne Roloson on the Stars’ first goal.
Admittedly, Mick deserves credit for admitting his error on the last goal. His apology, however, doesn’t make up for the points he cost Edmonton in the standings.
With a long and storied career under his belt, Mr. Magoo should be inspired by last week’s atrocious call to do what many fans have pleaded for him to do the past few years: retire.
