$101 million to Western!
Cheers took centre stage at an announcement by President and Vice-Chancellor Paul Davenport, the University Students’ Council and Society of Graduate Students, yesterday in the University Community Centre.
The presentation by student leaders announced that by 2018, the student contribution to Western will be $101 million in total. Of this $101 million, $86.2 million will fund the new Thompson Recreation and Athletics Centre, with the remaining $14.8 million going toward undergraduate and graduate awards.
USC President Tom Stevenson noted the contribution was the largest ever by a student body to a Canadian university.
“We cannot lose sight of the burden of a postsecondary education,” SGS President Duane Jacques said on the importance of student awards and bursaries.
Davenport also congratulated the students for their contribution.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you ... There really is something special about Western, and part of that special thing we have is an extraordinary student body.”
