Alliance loses marriage motion but
vote fractures the Liberals
A motion by the Canadian Alliance to preserve the traditional
definition of marriage as that between a man and a woman was
narrowly defeated by a vote of 137-132 in Parliament this Tuesday.
"This is a historic step forward in the Liberal Party,
as well as for the government and the Canadian people,"
said Mike Murphy, director of communication for the Liberal
minister of justice. "[It also] means that [the Alliance's]
narrow view of things will continue."

Women take night back, men not invited
London's women are set to reclaim the streets tonight as part
of an effort to eliminate violence and affirm the independence
of women.
Take Back the Night, a march in honour of the women killed
in the Montreal Massacre, is a symbolic move to show women can
feel safe at night without a male escort, said Karla Baker,
coordinator of the Women's Issues Network, one of the groups
involved with the Women's Events Committee, the organizing body
of the march.
