MEN'S WATERPOLO
The Mustangs men's waterpolo team competed in the Ontario University
Althletics championships this past weekend at the University of
Toronto. The team had a strong performance and came as close as
ever to winning the championship.

In the semi-final Western's leading scorer Dave
Fenicky scored five goals in a 10-6 win over the host Varsity Blues.
That win set up a championship match against the Queen's Golden
Gaels.
Western had lost both matches earlier in the year
against the Gaels and were looking for revenge when it counted most.
Queen's started strong taking a quick 3-0 lead,
but Western battled back to take a 5-4 lead. The game was tied 6-6
going into the final quarter, when Queen's scored two unanswered
goals to pull away and take the gold medal 10-7. Fenicky scored
two goals for the Mustangs and Andrew Valyi added two.
It was Queen's first ever championship in 45 years
of OUA competition, while Western will have to wait another year
for theirs. On a positive note, Western coach Ray Lumsden was named
OUA coach of the year, while Fenicky and goaltender Jim MacLachlan
were named OUA all-stars.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Rebeca McColl scored a game high 15 points for the Mustangs women's
basketball team as they defeated the Brock Badgers 60-59 Saturday
afternoon -it was Brock's first home loss of the season. Cheryl
Atkinson added 12 points for the Mustangs as they gained ground
on the first place Badgers in the OUA West division. They face Laurier
at 12 p.m. this Saturday at Alumni Hall in the last weekend of OUA
sports action before the Christmas break.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Mustangs men's basketball team remains winless at 0-5 after
an 83-75 loss to Brock, ranked ninth in Canada, on Saturday. Darin
Leonard led the Mustangs with 22 points, while guard Adam Peaker
added 18 points along with six assists. The Mustangs are in last
place in the OUA West division. They will look for their first win
this Saturday against the Wilfrid Laurier Goldenhawks at 2 p.m.
at Alumni Hall.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
With a victory over the McMaster Marauders, the Western men's volleyball
team moved back to .500 with a record of 4-4. Western defeated McMaster
3-1 with scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-21. Western sits in
sixth place in the tight OUA, but are just two points out of second
and four out of first. They face the 0-6 Laurier Goldenhawks this
Saturday at Alumni Hall.
MEN'S SQUASH
The Mustangs men's squash team played an intercollegiate tournament
at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY on Saturday and Sunday. The
eight ranked Mustangs fell to fourth ranked Princeton 7-2 and to
seventh ranked Cornell 6-3. They bounced back with an upset victory
over fifth ranked Penn 7-2.
FIGURE SKATING
The defending OUA champion Western figure skating team competed
at the Queen's Invitational on Friday, the first event of the season.
They competed against 10 other teams and ended up losing out to
the Queen's Golden Gaels.
The final standings were very close and although
Western had three first place finishes to Queen's two, the Golden
Gaels ended up with more total team points to take the championship.
The team will not compete again until after the new year at the
Toronto Invitational.
