Four former Mustangs
were recently inducted into Western's Cross Country and Track and Field
Hall of Fame at the Don Wright Dinner on Sat., May 24.
Bruce Waller, a distance runner, competed at Western from 1952 to 1954
and was the winner of the first Hector Phillips Memorial Trophy as the
Ontario Universities Track and Field Championships' MVP. He is also the
only Mustang to ever win the award twice.
Eleanor Ward is a former Canadian record holder in the high jump and also
competed in the hurdles, long jump, shot put and 200 metres as a part
of the Pentathlon. In 1962 she was awarded the F.W.P. Jones Trophy as
the most outstanding female student-athlete at Western.
Hylke van der Wal competed at Western from 1963 to 1964 after returning
from competing in the United States on a scholarship. He only competed
in one Ontario Universities Outdoor Championship, but won the 3,000m Steeplechase
for seven consecutive years at the Canadian Open Championships.
Mary Riezebos was an all-round athlete who competed on the track and field
team and also played on the women's basketball team. She broke Ward's
high jump record at a meet in 1972 and one week later led the Mustangs
to their first team title at the Ontario Universities Championships with
three gold medals and a silver.
