Whitehead

National standard high jumper and relay runner. Fourth-year health
science student. Future chiropractor. Calgary native. Total package?
Our readers thought so.
Lindsay Whitehead of the track and field team, topped out the balloting
of The Gazette's Western Varsity Athlete All-Hot Team.
Whitehead went to Strathcona Tweesmuir high school in Calgary, where
she competed in track and field and volleyball.
"I just wanted a change of scenery," said Whitehead, regarding
her decision to come half way across the country to Western. "And
they had a really good track team."
Although, Lindsay ran relays in high school and still does now for
the Mustangs, her area of track and field expertise is high jump.
She has maintained a national standard in the high jump since coming
to London and finished fourth at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport
championships last year. She has already qualified for the Nationals
again this year.
Lindsay has already applied to chiropractic schools in the United
States for the next school year and, even though she says she loves
London, it will probably be back to Calgary for Whitehead when her
schooling is completed.
Valentine's Day plans were, as yet, "undecided" this year
for Lindsay, who has a track meet in Windsor the following day. She
did reminisce about a memorable Valentine's Day when her boyfriend
at the time got her a dozen roses and wrapped a reason why he loved
her around each stem. And he bought Lindsay's mother flowers, too.
Take notes gentlemen.

"Clean shirt, new shoes and I don't know where I'm goin' to.
Silk suit, black tie, I don't need a reason why. They come a runnin'
just as fast as they can 'cuz every girl crazy 'bout a sharp dressed
man." ZZ Top
Although Christian Heffernan does not look much like anyone in ZZ
Top (he recently shaved off his beard), he was the top vote-getter
in The Gazette's Western Varsity Athlete All-Hot Team voting.
Heffernan, a native London boy, spent three years south of the border,
roaming various outfields, trying his hand at professional baseball
in the Atlanta Braves farm system.
"Heff" is now a two-sport star at Western, where he is a
member of the Mustangs football and track teams. In his third year
as a slotback on the football team, Heffernan was selected to the
second-team Ontario University Athletics All-Star Team. On the track,
Christian burns it up in the short sprints and relays, as one of the
faster dudes, not only at Western, but in Canada.
"I like track the least by far," Christian said with a grin
when he was asked his favourite sport. "It hurts too much and
I'm more nervous at the start of a track meet than anything else."
Heffernan attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School and plans on teaching
after he graduates from Western. He's also interested in coaching
when his playing days are over, which was spurred on by his experiences
in the summer working with children at the Sport Western camps.
