The University Community Centre was filled with some mud yesterday – and thrown in for good measure was some lively debate.

Another debate was held for the six University Students' Council presidential hopefuls, in an attempt to get their messages out to students.

Two Western professors have won the highest honour for research excellence given by the university.

The seventh annual Hellmuth Prizes for Achievement in Research were recently awarded to French professor Marilyn Randall and chemistry professor Peter Norton.

After scrutinizing the candidates' campaigns for University Student's Council president for the past two weeks and attending endless debates and forums, The Gazette is ready to present to you our annual candidate evaluations. Six gentlemen are vying for the heart of a lone bachelorette: Western itself.

I have a confession to make. I'm 20-years-old and I am a virgin.

Today's western pop-culture saturates every fib of our moral being with sex. From Britney and Christina's "dirrty" bodies, we're all constantly being bombarded with sex, sex and more sex. All these images seem to be sending the message that being a virgin in your 20s is more taboo than having sex at 14, making me, the 20-year-old virgin, feel like I am at fault.

Even if the gold-embossed poetry inside the cards you will (or won't) get this year are devoid of deeper meaning, Valentine's Day, for many, has its fair share.

With today being Valentine's Day, The Gazette asked several Western professors just what the day means to us – as individuals and as a culture alike.
