Recent comments made by the president of the University of Toronto suggest a support for differentiation in funding for Canada's research-intensive and non-research intensive universities.

The comments were made during a speech at the Empire Club of Canada, a speakers' forum, in Toronto last Thursday. President Robert Birgeneau said the leading research universities in Canada occupy a special place in the public's educational needs.

University Students' Council presidential candidates slung mud and filled the room with hot air during yesterday's first-ever platform debate.

The candidates were questioned on a variety of issues in their respective platforms.

Several hundred people crowded into the King's College lecture theatre Sunday night as activists Leila Khaled Mouammar and Jaggi Singh spoke about the pending war in Iraq, the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the riot at Concordia University last fall.

"The weeks I spent in the West Bank and Israel were a profound experience," Singh said, noting his journey took place during November and December of 2002.

Gwynne Dyer, renowned military historian and journalist, whose columns are published in 45 countries, visited Western Friday afternoon and gave a speech at The Wave.

In his forthcoming book, entitled Ignorant Armies: Sliding into War in Iraq, Dyer tries to untangle the series of events which have sent the United States spiralling towards a possible war with Iraq.

Last week was more than your average week in terms of criminal activity, as campus hooliganism turned downright raunchy.

Rolling the dice for a shot at the top spot, Brook Dyson is currently in a battle with five other candidates for the position of president of the University Students' Council.

Although his name conjures up images of a type of tree, Cameron McAlpine is not the kind of University Students' Council presidential candidate you can chop down easily.
