Culture, eh? Ask any Canadian to define our country's culture and nine times out of 10, they'll come up with an answer relative to American culture. "We have gun control," "We're friendlier" or "Our beer is stronger." But, when we look outside of this box into what we are rather than what we aren't, it's not hard to see why some argue that Canadian culture does not exist. While some Canadians see our country's diversity as our culture, others deem us culture thieves who "borrow" from everyone else. So, what is Canadian culture? This remains a tough question with no definitive answer. We decided to try our best to find one. After a mingling of research and debate, we came to the conclusion that Canadian culture is diverse. At times, scattered and, yes, often borrowed - Canadian culture is a melange of icons and ideas. For this week's Campus & Culture feature, we discuss 10 of our favourite representations of Canadian culture which make our nation distinct. -Andrea Chiu |
