Purple Pipe: Fantuz and Hessel

Niru Somayajula/Gazette
EVEN WITH THE PIPE, IT'S ALWAYS A PERFECT SPIRAL. Mustangs quarterback Chris Hessel and wide receiver Andy Fantuz shared the coveted honour of Purple Pipe recipients this week.

Western Mustangs quarterback Chris Hessel and receiver Andy Fantuz are like Laverne and Shirley, Sonny and Rico, or Bert and Ernie. The killer combo is breaking records like Kurt Warner breaks fingers and there's still two games remaining on the Mustangs' schedule.

The Purple Pipe has mysteriously been shaking uncontrollably in the bowels of The Gazette's sports section. It's searching for something and we think we know what it is – the loving arms of Hessel and Fantuz.

Rookie Fantuz broke Dan Disley's receiving yards record (695) and James Prescott's receptions record (33) with 178 yards on 8 receptions against Toronto. Hessel topped Mike O'Briens passing yards record (2,041) and Steve Samways, Jamie Bone and Paul Ford's passing touchdowns record (12) with 350 yards and 3 touchdown passes.

Unfortunately, head coach Larry Haylor will need to be sharp this week as the Purple Pipe has never been awarded to co-winners. It's been known to drive people insane, therefore boys, remember the Care Bears motto of sharing when you hold the great pipe.
