Students locked out of class during a faculty strike at Dalhousie University in Halifax were herded back to class Monday after an agreement was reached between the university and the Dalhousie Faculty Association last week.

Fears that the academic year would be lost or prolonged because of the month-long strike were eased when the university's senate passed a motion to extend the current term until Apr. 25, reducing the exam period to three days, from Apr. 26 to 29, said Dalhousie spokeswoman Stacey Lewis.

"Professors are being encouraged to hold exams during class time," Lewis said.

Dalhousie Students' Union president Shawn Tracey said under the agreement, students must vote in class on how they want exams to progress.

"It is a good solution to a bad problem," he said.
