The sweet sounds of a half-mil

Western's National Centre for Audiology is enjoying the sweet sound of more coin.

Oticon, a manufacturer of hearing instruments, has given $575,000 to Campaign Western, said Erin Lawson, alumni relations and development officer for the faculty of health sciences.

The donation will be used to purchase new lab equipment, pay for a post-doctoral research assistant and support graduate students with scholarships.

Oticon's donation also helped the centre its annual fund-raising goal.

"Our goal was to raise $1.6 million, but we have raised over $2 million," Lawson said.

Various governments have matched some donations and, as a result, the centre has received over $3 million, Lawson said.

"This campaign has been an incredible success story. Companies have stepped up and shown a lot of philanthropy," she said.

Big bucks help little kids

The pitter-patter of tiny feet in the Social Science Centre will continue, thanks to a generous donation by a Western alumnus.

Mary Wright, who graduated in 1939 with a BA in philosophy and psychology, pledged $500,000 towards the University Laboratory Preschool.

Wright became the first woman to head a department at Western, upon her appointment to chair of the department of psychology in 1960. She established the University Laboratory Preschool in 1973 in the social science building and served as its director.

"The endowment will continue to allow us to support the needs of children with special needs," said Mary Lou Vernon, preschool's current director. "Children of 2-5 years of age with special needs will benefit most from this pledge," she said.
