Reassess beliefs

Re: Horovitz controversy

To the Editor:
I would like to look deeper into the Horovitz cartoon controversy to understand why some people have such a harsh reaction to it. In thinking about this, a passage from the transcendental book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" came to mind. Robert Pirsig writes "His lack of faith in reason was why [the central character] was so fanatically dedicated to it." He points out that "[one] is never dedicated to something they have complete confidence in. No one is fanatically shouting that the sun is going to rise tomorrow. They know it's going to rise tomorrow. When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths, it's always because these dogmas or goals are in doubt."

Who are you trying to convince? Why are you so offended? Is it because you have so little conviction that you believe your "god" may actually have procrastinated? O ye of little faith! It is such a pity you spend so much time trying to fool yourself. Perhaps it is time to reassess your belief system? Congratulations to those of you who had the courage of your convictions and faith enough to forgo this foolish dialogue.
