Western Round-up
Men's Basketball Western traveled to Waterloo this weekend for the Naismith Classic and came away as the consolation champions by beating Memorial University 94-83. Chris Webber led the team with 22 points. On Friday, the Mustangs beat Concordia 71-70 in their first game of the weekend tournament. Natt Graham, who was named to the tourney's all-star team, scored 19 points. Western then lost 87-74 to St. Francis Xavier.
Women's Basketball The women's basketball team had a successful weekend after returning from Kingston with the championship trophy winning the Frank Tyndall Tournament. The Mustangs won the title after beating Laval 84-68 in the finals on Sunday and winning games over Queen's (62-56) and Waterloo (85-51) to get to the championship game.
Badminton The Mustangs hosted an OUA cross-over tournament on the weekend and the men came away with a solid second-place finish, losing 7-4 to Queen's in the final. Some great individual performances came from Leo Chiu who had nine wins for the Mustangs and Mike Twiner with eight. Also contributing to the Western cause was Kevin Eng who contributed seven victories in the men's doubles and mixed doubles. Carolyn Smith picked up six victories for the women's team.
Volleyball The men's and women's volleyball teams maintained their undefeated records on Friday, beating the Windsor Lancers in both matches.
Swimming Both the men's and women's teams blew the Golden Hawks out of the water this weekend, coming away with convincing victories at Laurier. The women won 93-87 with first-place performances from Amy Bartoch in the 100-metre freestyle event and victory in the 200-metre by Stephanie Murray. The men won easily 118-89 with first-place finishes from Andrew Munro, who won the 200-metre fly and Chris Elliot, who won the 200-metre individual medley and 200-metre breaststroke, breaking the provincial record with a time of 2:23:55.
Rowing Both the men's and women's teams placed third at a national regatta held in Victoria last weekend.
